PHARMACOLOGY FOR THE ADVANCED PRACTICE NURSE

Entering Into a New Age: Pharmacology From Heart Failure to Co-Morbidities

This state of the art workshop will address the latest evidence based principles of pharmacotherapy with a focus on cardiovascular medications in the heart failure patient. Prescribing has long been a major component of the role of advanced practice nurses, but it has become more complex, especially in patients with cardiovascular disease where polypharmacy is more prevalent and the risk for adverse interactions is increased. Over the past few years, many new drug therapies have emerged onto the market for the management of heart failure and associated comorbidities. This workshop will assist in delineating their potential role, side effect, outcomes data, and monitoring.

This course will be taught by Nurse Practitioners and pharmacists in an intensive format and will include content on the latest, most up-to-date drug therapies for the management of patients with heart failure, electrolyte disturbances, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, pulmonary hypertension, and CNS disorders. The workshop will also include a segment on clinical pearls in the management of co-morbidities in heart transplant recipients, updates on the direct thrombin inhibitors, as well as, strategies to address medication management issues in heart failure patients.Case-based scenarios and round table discussions will be utilized throughout the course to reinforce content.
