Overview

Certification provides an additional benefit beyond licensure by demonstrating through examination that the Registered Nurse has acquired a core body of specialized knowledge and warrants adherence to specialized nursing standards. It benefits consumers and confers peer and public recognition upon those individuals who meet prescribed knowledge and experience requirements.

Certification granted by the AAHFN-Certification Board of Directors (CB) is pursuant to a voluntary procedure intended solely to test for special knowledge. The AAHFN-CB does not purport to license, to confer a right or privilege upon, or otherwise to define the qualifications of any person for nursing practice. The significance of certification in any jurisdiction or institution is the responsibility of the candidate to determine. The candidate should contact the appropriate state board of nursing or institution in order to determine practice implications.

Purpose of Certification

The purpose of Heart Failure Nursing Certification is to promote the highest standards of practice within the specialty, to validate attainment of a common knowledge base required for practice, and to encourage and promote continued educational growth.

Conferring of Certification

Certification is awarded to those who have successfully completed the certification process, i.e., those who meet the eligibility criteria and pass a multiple choice written examination. The designated certification is Certified Heart Failure Nurse (CHFN) for clinical registered nurses and the CHFN-K for non-clinical registered nurses.
